First Impressions

After an hour high-speed (动车) train ride from Shenzhen, there was a noticeable different in the population density in almost every location from metro to the streets of Guangzhou in comparison to Shenzhen. As a native San Franciscan, the atmosphere and vibe that Guangzhou radiates was quite comfortable and familiar to me. Overall, my first impressions of Guangzhou met my preconceived expectations.

Canton Tower/ Zhujiang River (广州塔和珠江)

“The Guangzhou Tower is one of the world′s most spectacular new buildings. It is not only the world′s tallest TV tower (600m), beating Toronto′s CN-tower (553m), but also a surprisingly beautiful structure.”

Sacred Heart Cathedral(圣心大教堂)

Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou, also known as the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or Shishi Catholic Church, is regarded as the ‘Notre Dame of East Asian’. The 130-year-old Roman Catholic cathedral is a holy and peaceful site in the bustling urban area, moreover, it is the biggest in Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guangzhou and one of the grandest double steeples Gothic architectures in China. Also, it is the largest granite Catholic structure in Southeast Asia, and one of only four all-granite Gothic churches in the world”

Shamian Island (沙面岛)

Shamian, previous known as Zhongliusha or Shicuizhou, is an elliptic sandbar in the Liwan District of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. The island’s name literally means “sandy surface” in Chinese. Surrounded by water, it is just like a giant ship mooring alongside the wharf. The Island has great historic significance. From the Song and the Qing Dynasty, it served as an important port for Guangzhou’s foreign trade. The it became a strategic point for city defense during the second Opium Wars (1856-1860). In 1859, the territory was divided into two concessions, given to France and United Kingdom (of which 4/5 went to the British and 1/5 to the French).

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was originally  built by the 72 Chen clans for the accommodation and preparation for the imperial examinations from Chen families in 1894 in Qing Dynasty. Later it was turned to be the Chen Clan’s Industry College, and later middle schools afterward.

Final Thoughts

Personally, I wouldn’t probably frequently return to Guangzhou given my own volition and preferences, since I would prefer to directly go to Hong Kong where you get the best of many universes. However, if I were restricted to choose a city to travel within the Guangdong province, then Guangzhou would be the first choice.
