Tencent exclusive sponsorship of of the “Public Welfare App Prototype Design Hackathon” transpired from November 14th to the 15th, 2015, held at Shenzhen Tencent facilities. Tencent Volunteers Association of the United NGO2.0 orchestrated this seminar to contribute to the efforts of local social enterprises better engage in public welfare-related activities. In a short span of two days, the seminar was purposed for individuals, volunteers, and leaders associated with NGOs in the public welfare scene in Shenzhen, who may be oblivious to computer programming and graphic design, to equip them with rudimentary knowledge and skills required to produce a complete public welfare-related APP prototype design.
NGO2.0 public service mission is to provide customer service to create a platform for cross-border collaboration between participants and local influential leaders in respective fields that contribute advantageous reference for the public welfare NGO community in China. The event is also the first time NGO2.0 public service mission based in Shenzhen. In the future, NGO2.0 aspires to connect more IT companies and communities in hopes to improve the public service in Shenzhen．
SEMINAR SPEAKERS AND LECTURERS
This seminar was lead by the collaboration of the Tencent and NGO2.0 team and the affiliated domestic well-known prototype design tool team – Modao (墨刀), to address the lack of programming skills or product development experience of professionals engaged in public welfare NGOs, and proceed in a series of lectures and presentations on APP prototype design, UI design and public communication through a salon-style experience sharing and exchange.
The event also invited professionals from Yingxuan (英选), The Corner (角落) and other technology companies and Mobile Information Engineering College of Zhongshan University, overall, more than 30 representatives from all over the country to deliver a face to face seminar.

Here is a snippet from He Zihan’s presentation on “How to start programming an APP from ground zero”.
1. Launch from an idea or problem
2. Determine the demand and needs at hand
3. Display APP process and function
4. Trim off non-core functions

7. Establish a developer account for the APP

9. Aquire quick access to product feedback

The participants of this seminar were comprised of representatives of the public welfare NGOs who are devoted to proposed a solution to address a corresponding social need via developing an APP prototype. The causes each NGO representative supported ranges from children’s education, disadvantaged communities and ethnic groups (including women and people with disabilities), using art as a vehicle for social impact, public welfare activities, government procurement services and other fields.
After the two day seminar, results from a conducted survey revealed that the participants of the survey found this APP prototype design seminar very helpful and are satisfied with their new found knowledge and skills, furthermore, participant feedback also noted that the NGO representatives truly believe in the value between the use of technology in public welfare arena, lining up with Tencent’s vision of utilising technology as a medium to promote the development of public welfare in China.

1. Finding Inspiration— via dribbble.com: Succinctly, Dribbble is a website featuring an online community of designers that pool together to create a reservoir of solutions and answers pertaining to user’s inquires, furthermore, it has an archive of work, thought-processes, and current projects strung together by web designers, graphic designers, illustrators, icon artists, typographers, and logo designers, etc. “Dribbble is a place to show and tell, promote, discover, and explore design”
2. Screen Design— via Photoshop/Sketch: Aim for simplicity, symmetric arrangement, and proper colour matching. Be ascertain that the overall text adhere to a systematic, unified, and orderly theme. The goal is to present a clean and clear interface for users to easily navigate and acquire information, moreover, to contribute or engage in a certain function within the APP.

What is the Purpose of Using an APP for Social Work?
-Create a function to increase volunteer awareness and involvement
-Establish a platform to boost the amount of donations and contributions to respective NGOs
-Broaden a given NGOs influence to bolster participant involvement in relevant-activities and raise the number of subscribers
The Quintessential of Brand Marketing:
Consumers true intentions when purchasing a product or service is to gain value and not necessary to acquire the actual product or service. A philosophised interpretation, brand marketing, is much more abstract than tangible. Lets talk product association, a term coined to denote the psychological sensation or emotions associated when a consumer views a product advertisement, for instance, Apple’s promotion and marketing of iPhone to correlate with attractive and interesting people enjoying music, etc.
Demonstrations of this concept given during the lecture involved 小鬼 playing various short advertisement clips from different companies. The class watched a total of 5 clips and had only one vote to which clips were more effective. The result was quite telling, the clips with the most votes possessed traits that invoked an emotional reaction.
All in all, based on my observations, possessing an myriad of tools, skills, and abilities does not necessitate success. Some groups had quite talented individuals equipped with highly sought after technical suaveness, nevertheless, had difficulties producing a compelling APP. Admittedly, most of the required mechanical and design features for a successful APP were present, yet what was alluded and absence was a well-thought out business model and proper leadership to orchestrate the fruition of the mission of the APP.
This team performed the best since it had the factors for success: means (technical skills,etc), the vision (the groups purpose and mission for the APP was clear), and proper leadership (the team leader did an exceptional job coordinating and communicating with his team members the steps needed to achieve the end goal)
